Aims and Summary

This module aims to cultivate a comprehensive grasp of Human Resource Management Theory and Practice as it pertains to organizational managers. In today’s landscape, the Human Resources function must function as a genuine business partner, offering essential support to operational managers. Simultaneously, managers must effectively implement the company’s HR policies in the field, making HR a shared responsibility.

The course guides learners through an employee’s journey, encompassing recruitment, mobility, training, and departure, emphasizing the strategic perspective of HR and its practical application at each stage. Learners will also explore the factors influencing workplace practices, their impact on motivation and commitment, and how these elements define their future role as company managers. This module fosters a holistic understanding of HR, aligning theoretical insights with real-world managerial practices.

Intended Module Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Understand issues associated with HRM and the activities that are associated with the implementation of HRM.
  2. Evaluate the way HRM is applied in practice by line managers.
  3. With the aid of understanding different approaches to HRM, analyse HR situations and be able to develop appropriate responses.
  4. Critically engage with the effectiveness and appropriateness of strategic decision-making of HRM activities (e.g., recruitment & selection, performance management, investment diversity and learning & development).
