Aims and Summary

The objective of this course is to develop the analytical skills for making optimal corporate financial decisions. The course covers several topics including the concept of risk and return, the opportunity cost of capital, etc.

This module contributes to the overall vision of the course to equip graduates with the skills, knowledge and experience to enter the world of work as effective and ethically aware managers.

Intended Module Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Critically explain how to measure and compare risks across investment opportunities and appraise the basic, essential, and widely used financial concepts such as mean return, volatility, and beta.
  2. Evaluate and apply the leading theories linking risk and return in a competitive economy, and identify how these theories can be used to estimate the returns required by investors in different stock-market investments.
  3. Critically analyze and formulate the project Cost of Capital and measure the Cost of Equity.
  4. Demonstrate critical understanding of how financing can be incorporated into the valuation of projects and ongoing businesses.
