Aims and Summary

Since the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, the productive endeavours of men and women across the planet have expanded exponentially, transforming societies worldwide. accompanied by the consumption of a spectacular amount of goods and services and by the exhaustion of natural resources.

This module is designed to provide students with an understanding of the basic concepts, principles and analytical methods of both microeconomics and macroeconomics. . Microeconomics delves into the behaviour of individual actors, like consumers and firms, in the economic landscape, while macroeconomics scrutinizes broader economic phenomena, such as national income, inflation, and unemployment.

This module also analyses how this point was reached and examines issues in the economics of sustainability (economic tools, new indicators of wealth and welfare, forms of prosperity without growth).

Intended Module Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and analysis of the limitations of different indicators of economic production and personal welfare.
  2. Show understanding of how market failure underlies different environmental and sustainability issues.
  3. Identify and explain how economics can help formulate policies that impacts sustainability and development.
  4. Equip students with the tools and knowledge to understand, analyse, and address the economic and environmental challenges facing our world today.
